Career Options
Political Science majors have gone on to successful careers in the following areas:
Law - The Political Science curriculum provides the strong liberal arts background which should aid students going to law school. C.W. Post's pre-law adviser is Professor Jeremy Buchman, a member of the Political Science Department. All students who are considering going on to law school should consult with him as early in their undergraduate careers as possible.
Public Administration - Many majors go into government service:
(1) Federal Government - a Political Science major may find a federal job in nearly any agency or branch of the U.S. government, for example, as administrative, budget, or personnel officer for a U.S. government agency, etc.
(2) State and Local Government - majors are employed by state and local governments, their branches and agencies, where they both seek answers to societal problems and carry out the day-to-day functions of government. The Political Science Department, in conjunction with the Department of Public Administration, offers an Accelerated B.A. in Political Science/Master's Degree in Public Administration for entering freshman, transfer students, and continuing C.W. Post students. In order to provide training for those individuals who desire to go on to government service on the state, local, and federal levels, our M.P.A. degree offers concentrations in Administrative Theory and Practice and Policy and Planning. The Concentration in Community Services offers the student the background to enter social and public service programs and agencies - community and mental health organizations, geriatrics, city management, etc.
Teaching - Although provisional certification to teach social studies in public secondary schools in New York State is obtained through the School of Education, the Political Science Department furnishes one of the vehicles for obtaining the substantive knowledge required to comply with the state requirements. Those wishing to pursue a teaching position in colleges and universities must obtain an advanced degree, preferable a Ph.D.
Business - Many Political Science graduates have traditionally found careers in the fields of marketing, personnel, advertising, public relations, insurance, banking, finance, the electronic media, and print journalism.
Specialized studies may also assist students to pursue their ideal professions. The B.A. Degree in International Studies can be related to careers in the following areas:
Private Industry - Multinational corporations, import-export firms, airlines, shipping, international service organizations, international banking, law, and journalism.
Government Service - U.S. Department of State (Foreign Service and International Communications Agency), Defense Department, Commerce Department, Peace Corps.
