Cunningham speaks on
European
Commission enlargement and its challenges
George Cunningham, director of the
press and public affairs office of the European Commission Delegation (EU)
in New York, presented a lecture in December of 2001 entitled "EU Enlargement:
The Challenges Ahead," in the Great Hall.
Cunningham joined the European Commission
in 1993. As the director of the press and public affairs office, he is now
engaged in building the European Union's profile and image at the UN as well
as representing the views of the European Commission in the New York Tri-state
area. He has also worked on the EU's forthcoming enlargement and at the Directorate-General
for Trade, and has written many communications strategies for the EU as well
as chaired a committee to improve the coherence of communicating the EU's
policies worldwide. Cunningham also deals with Cyprus, the Middle East peace
process, UN reform and EU enlargement, and is on the executive committee of
the Society of Foreign Consuls in New York.

Before joining
the Commission, Cunningham served at the United Nations in New York from 1987-1990.
He was also an advisor to the Polish Council of Ministers in Warsaw, where
he devised the first Polish communications strategy on European integration.
He founded and became director of PACE International Affairs, a non-governmental
organization educating young people about foreign policy issues.
Cunningham has a Master's Degree in modern history from Oxford University,
is a fellow of the Foreign Policy Association in New York and a member of
the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London. In 1987, he edited
