The Department of Sociology & Anthropology
This department has the unique advantage of combining two disciplines, each with its own history, methodology, and conceptual framework. A Bachelor's degree in sociology prepares students to find employment in business and throughout the public sector. It also prepares students to develop specialized skills by focusing on particular areas of concentration and in gaining hands-on experience through a supervised internship.
AREAS OF CONCENTRATION:
(Students who specialize in one of these areas will receive the following designation on their transcripts: B.A. Sociology/ Concentration in Applied Sociology)
MINOR IN SOCIOLOGY
Minoring in sociology will enhance any major by providing an understanding of the interdependence of institutions, the causes of social problems, and the nature of social change. Many business majors, for example, minor in sociology.
MINOR IN ANTHROPOLOGY
As technology and communities allow greater interaction among people, as our own culture becomes more complex, and as boundaries between cultures become less clear, anthropological skills and approaches are increasingly critical to foster understanding of any society, its organizations, communities, and institutions.
SOCIOLOGY MAJOR/COMPUTER LIBERAL ARTS MINOR
As a trained researcher, a sociologist is able to place problems within a social and organizational framework. With expertise in data analysis and data management, the sociologist can construct a research design that addresses the problem, develop data-gathering instruments, conduct the research, analyze the data, and present findings to executives, boards, and other interested persons. Sociology Majors minoring in Computer Sciences for Liberal Arts are required to take 18 credits in the Computer Science/Management Engineering Program.
