THE WRITING CENTER Humanities Hall Room 202 Fall 2008 Monday-Thursday 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. Friday - Noon - 4 p.m. The Writing Center is staffed by trained graduate and undergraduate students who work with you on a one-to-one basis to help you develop the strongest texts possible. For a face-to-face Writing Workshop, simply bring: * a copy of your text; or an outline; or your notes and ideas so far; * your assignment if you have one; * your questions, or ideas of what kind of feedback you're looking for. If you're unsure about your questions, that's okay; a Writing Assistant will work with you to set goals for the session. To schedule a 45 minute Writing Workshop, call (516) 299-2732, or come to Humanities Hall, Room 202, during our open hours. You can sign up for an appointment up to 2 weeks in advance. Walk-in/Drop-in Workshops are also available, if a Workshop spot is open at the time you walk in. Consider a "virtual" Writing Workshop, in which you submit a draft of your text online. Reasons to work remotely, rather than face to face, might include coming to HM 202 and finding all the Workshop spots full, or finding The Writing Center closed during a time you want feedback on your work, or wanting to try out, or having a preference for, working remotely. When you submit a text online, a Writing Assistant opens your submission and reads your work, and then considers and responds to your specific questions. The "Submit a Draft" section of this website explains the process in detail, but the logistics are as follows: Writing Center staff check for students' online submissions whenever classes are in session during Fall and Spring semesters, and respond to submissions within 48 hours. When classes are not in session—for example, during Rosh Hashanah, or on President's Day—your online submission will be opened and read when classes resume, and responded to within the next 48 hours. On regular weekends (i.e., not holidays and not Winter Break or Spring Break) your online submission is read and responded to within the usual 48 hours. Writing Center Resources In addition to Writing Assistants, we have computers, bookmarked websites, style manuals, self-editing software, instructional texts and current periodicals. * Why do people go to the Writing Center? * Why might I go? People come to the Writing Center because all writers can improve their writing through feedback. We can help you to brainstorm, plan, edit, revise and proofread your texts. In short, we can collaborate with you on any work in progress.
