Dr. Palvia is Associate Professor and Director of MIS at the College of Management in Long Island University, C.W. Post Campus since Fall of 1995. Prior to this, he was Senior Lecturer in Super Scale (equivalent to Senior Associate Professor in USA) for three years at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. He has 23 years of experience -- 10 years in industry and more than 13 years in academia. He has had rewarding professional experience in various sectors of the industry -- computer industry (IBM World Trade in India, Control Data in USA), public sector (National Dairy Development Board in India, Hennepin County in USA), engineering industry (DCM Chemical Works in India) and financial sector (Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis in USA). Professor Palvia has taught several MIS and Management Sciences courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels at University of Minnesota, Babson College, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and Long Island University (LIU). Dr. Palvia has a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota (1985). His research interests and publications are in the areas of -- Management of the Systems Development Process, Human Side of Information Technology, Social Issues of Information Technology, Global Issues of Information Technology, IT Applications and Architecture, Computer Software Education Approaches, and Use of Internet for Global Electronic Commerce. Quantitatively speaking, Dr. Palvia has published nineteen refereed journal articles, forty nine refereed conference proceedings articles, two books, nine refereed book chapters, eighteen working papers, and two business cases. Furthermore, he has supervised one Ph.D. thesis, has received eleven research grants, has been invited thirteen times to give talks before professional groups, and has conducted two interviews with CIOs for publication in journals. At present, he is working on six research papers. Qualitatively speaking, Professor Palviaís articles have been published in prestigious journals like the Communications of the ACM, MIS Quarterly, Journal of Information Systems, Information & Management, Journal of Systems Management, International Journal of Information Management, and Journal of Global Information Management. Furthermore, he has received five significant recognitions/awards. A book titled, "Global Information Technology and Systems Management," co-edited by Dr. Palvia and published in 1996 has received rave reviews from academicians, practitioners, and research centers. Reviews of this book have been published in the Computerworld and the Journal of Global Information Management. A pioneering book co-edited by him and titled, "Global Issues of Information Technology Management" was published in 1992. Copies of this book sold in over 30 countries. Dr. Palvia is an Associate Editor of the Journal
of Global Information Technology Management (JGITM). Most recently, Dr.
Palvia is Editor-In-Chief of a new journal titled Journal of
Information Technology Cases and Applications (JITCA). He has formed
the Editorial Board with members drawn from all over the world. The first
issue of the journal will be out in January, 1999. TEACHING:(top) Dr. Palvia has more than twelve years of full-time teaching experience. He has also taught part-time for over eight years at the University of Minnesota. At the undergraduate level, Professor Palvia has taught a wide range of MIS courses including Systems Analysis and Design and Information Systems Management. At the graduate level, he has taught almost all MIS courses including Systems Analysis and Design, Information Systems Concepts and Applications, Telecommunications and Network Management, Data and Database Management, DSS and Expert Systems, and Global IT Management. In his secondary interest areas, Dr. Palvia has also taught Management Science, and Statistics courses again both at undergraduate and graduate levels. The student feedback as well as peer evaluations for Dr.
Palviaís classes at Long Island University (LIU) and Nanyang Technological
University (NTU) were very positive. Students at NTU even recommended
Professor Palvia for the Best Teacher award. During his seven years
at Babson College (primarily a teaching institution), Dr. Palvia was rated
a very solid teacher as determined by both student evaluations and
peer evaluations. The student feedback at the University of Minnesota was
also consistently very good throughout the eight years of part-time
teaching. SERVICE: (top) At LIU, Dr. Palvia has contributed significantly while serving on the Faculty Development committee including the preparation of the Faculty Handbook. He is Director of MIS and is revisiting the entire undergraduate and graduate MIS curriculum at LIU. Currently, he is a member of the C.W. Post Campus Research Committee. At NTU, he has contributed successfully in various capacities -- as Associate Director of the Information Management Research Centre (IMARC), and as the Program Chair of the MIT-NTU conference held in July 1993. Dr. Palvia also made several presentations at the IMARC workshops and also helped in the development of MBA curriculum at NTU. He was a prolific contributor to Babson College as monthly Colloquium Coordinator, actuarial science curriculum Champion, strategic planning team Member, Faculty Advisor to students' South Asian club, and Curriculum Advisor to undergraduate students. Dr. Palvia has been track chair, session chair, and
discussant for several regional, national, and international conferences
including ICIS, ASI, DSI, and IRMA conferences. He is on the editorial board
of the Journal of Enterprising Culture. He is currently the President of
Sandesh -- an organization of South Asian faculty members associated with
the Decision Science Institute (DSI). CONSULTING:
(top) Over the years, Professor Palvia has supervised the analysis, design, and preparation of implementation plans for several information systems applications. These systems have ranged from simple transaction processing systems to systems for strategic advantage for educational institutions, electronics firms, financial institutions, computer companies, hospitals, and non-profit organizations. Dr. Palvia has developed and/or implemented structured analysis, design, and development approaches and methodologies in several organizations. In summary, over the last 23 years, Dr. Palvia has
developed an extremely good network with MIS community worldwide
both in academia and industry. His wife is an actuary with Prudential Life
Insurance in Newark, NJ. His three children are with Motorola (software
engineer), undergraduate with Cornell University, and undergraduate with
Binghamton University respectively. He lives in Long Island. |
