Masters of Business Administration
General Information
Criteria for Admissions Decisions
Applicants must hold a four-year bachelor's degree from an accredited college
or university. Applicants who have attended institutions outside the United
States must hold a degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree. No specific
undergraduate major is required for application. Applicants who are in
their senior year at an undergraduate institution may apply for admission
to the School, but acceptance will be made contingent upon submission
of final grades and receipt of the bachelor's degree.
The College of Management, School of Business has established the following
criteria for its Graduate students as the most critical in the evaluation
of applications: scholastic achievement and a desire to excel as evidenced
by previous academic work, aptitude for graduate study as indicated by
scores on the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT), motivation,
leadership potential and maturity as evidenced by prior work experience,
extracurricular activities, letters of recommendation, and essay.
Admission

Applications should be submitted at the earliest date possible prior to the
start of the semester of intended study.

Matriculation Policy
A student is matriculated into the School of Business, College of Management
when the candidate meets all of the requirements for admission into the
Master of Business Administration (MBA) program.
Probation/Unsatisfactory Grades
Students are expected to maintain at least a 3.0 GPA in the MBA Program.
Students who do not maintain this standard will be reviewed and evaluated
by the Academic Standing Committee. The Academic Standing Committee will
make a recommendation to the Dean concerning the student's potential to
successfully complete the MBA program. Final disposition will be made
by the Dean.
Transfer Credit
Transfer credits normally will be granted only for courses taken within
5 years prior to registration at the C.W. Post Campus. Transfer credits
are limited to 6 credits, must be at least 3.0 grade point and are not
recorded as part of the GPA. Transfer credit will not be granted where
the grade point is less than 3.0.
Incomplete Grades
Under special circumstances, a faculty member may assign a grade of
Incomplete (I). Incompletes must be removed within 6 weeks from the start
of the following semester in which the Incomplete was issued. An Incomplete
will be issued only by written agreement between the student and faculty
member.
Leave of Absence
A student who chooses not to register for courses in a given semester
must request a leave of absence, in writing, from the Dean. A student
who is absent from the program for one year must reapply for admission
to the program.
International Students
Applicants from countries other than the United States should file
applications for admission no later than May 1st for Fall admission and
October 1st for Spring admission. Applicants, for whom English is a second
language, must have a high level of proficiency in English as demonstrated
by submitting the results of the TOEFL examination prior to admission
to the School of Business. In addition to the TOEFL examination score,
on arrival at the C.W. Post Campus, all students with English as a second
language will be required to take an assessment test. Depending on the
assessment scores the student either will be: l ) admitted to a full course
of study, 2) allowed a limited course of study plus intensified courses
in English, or 3) be required to take a full semester of intensified English
as offered by the University. International students will be required
to fulfill all other requirements for admission into the Program.
Waivers
General Business Core courses (500 level) may be waived by the Academic
Standing Committee on the basis of 1) equivalent graduate courses taken
at other schools with grades of at least 3.0, or 2) completion of a minimum
of 2 undergraduate courses per graduate business course with grades of
at least 3.0 in each course or 3) successful completion of a waiver examination.
These courses must normally have been taken within 5 years prior to admission
into the MBA Program. Students must submit university (other school) course
descriptions for each requested waiver. A fee is charged for each waiver
examination. Students may obtain the waiver examination application in
the Academic Advisor's office. The Academic Advisors will provide the
dates.
Matriculated students having courses waived are excused from those courses
and, as a result, their number of credits are reduced.
Plagiarism
Plagiarism is a practice which is not only unacceptable but that is
to be condemned in the strongest terms possible on the basis of moral,
educational, and legal grounds.
Under the present Campus policy, the offense of plagiarism may be punishable
by a range of penalties up to and including failure in the course and
expulsion from the University.
Residence
A degree-seeking candidate must complete 30 semester hours of credit
in residence. To be in residence, the student must have registered for
courses offered at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University.
Courses taken at another university after admission to Long Island University
may not be used for transfer credit unless prior permission is obtained
from the department chair. The total sum of transfer credit is normally
limited to 6 semester hours of credit and is not to be used in the computation
of the GPA. Transfer credit will be allowed for an approved graduate course
in which the grade was B or higher.
Application for Degree
Candidates for graduation are expected to file a degree application
well in advance of Commencement and to notify the Graduate Records Office
of their expected date of graduation (see deadline date in Academic Calendar).
