Criteria for Admissions Decisions

Applicants must hold a four-year bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Applicants who have attended institutions outside the United States must hold a degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree. No specific undergraduate major is required for application. Applicants who are in their senior year at an undergraduate institution may apply for admission to the School, but acceptance will be made contingent upon submission of final grades and receipt of the bachelor's degree.

The College of Management, School of Business has established the following criteria for its Graduate students as the most critical in the evaluation of applications: scholastic achievement and a desire to excel as evidenced by previous academic work, aptitude for graduate study as indicated by scores on the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT), motivation, leadership potential and maturity as evidenced by prior work experience, extracurricular activities, letters of recommendation, and essay.

Matriculation Policy
A student is matriculated into the School of Business, College of Management when the candidate meets all of the requirements for admission into the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program.

Probation/Unsatisfactory Grades
Students are expected to maintain at least a 3.0 GPA in the MBA Program. Students who do not maintain this standard will be reviewed and evaluated by the Academic Standing Committee. The Academic Standing Committee will make a recommendation to the Dean concerning the student's potential to successfully complete the MBA program. Final disposition will be made by the Dean.

Transfer Credit
Transfer credits normally will be granted only for courses taken within 5 years prior to registration at the C.W. Post Campus. Transfer credits are limited to 6 credits, must be at least 3.0 grade point and are not recorded as part of the GPA. Transfer credit will not be granted where the grade point is less than 3.0.

Incomplete Grades
Under special circumstances, a faculty member may assign a grade of Incomplete (I). Incompletes must be removed within 6 weeks from the start of the following semester in which the Incomplete was issued. An Incomplete will be issued only by written agreement between the student and faculty member.

Leave of Absence
A student who chooses not to register for courses in a given semester must request a leave of absence, in writing, from the Dean. A student who is absent from the program for one year must reapply for admission to the program.

International Students
Applicants from countries other than the United States should file applications for admission no later than May 1st for Fall admission and October 1st for Spring admission. Applicants, for whom English is a second language, must have a high level of proficiency in English as demonstrated by submitting the results of the TOEFL examination prior to admission to the School of Business. In addition to the TOEFL examination score, on arrival at the C.W. Post Campus, all students with English as a second language will be required to take an assessment test. Depending on the assessment scores the student either will be: l ) admitted to a full course of study, 2) allowed a limited course of study plus intensified courses in English, or 3) be required to take a full semester of intensified English as offered by the University. International students will be required to fulfill all other requirements for admission into the Program.

Waivers
General Business Core courses (500 level) may be waived by the Academic Standing Committee on the basis of 1) equivalent graduate courses taken at other schools with grades of at least 3.0, or 2) completion of a minimum of 2 undergraduate courses per graduate business course with grades of at least 3.0 in each course or 3) successful completion of a waiver examination. These courses must normally have been taken within 5 years prior to admission into the MBA Program. Students must submit university (other school) course descriptions for each requested waiver. A fee is charged for each waiver examination. Students may obtain the waiver examination application in the Academic Advisor's office. The Academic Advisors will provide the dates.

Matriculated students having courses waived are excused from those courses and, as a result, their number of credits are reduced.

Plagiarism
Plagiarism is a practice which is not only unacceptable but that is to be condemned in the strongest terms possible on the basis of moral, educational, and legal grounds.

Under the present Campus policy, the offense of plagiarism may be punishable by a range of penalties up to and including failure in the course and expulsion from the University.

Residence
A degree-seeking candidate must complete 30 semester hours of credit in residence. To be in residence, the student must have registered for courses offered at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University.

Courses taken at another university after admission to Long Island University may not be used for transfer credit unless prior permission is obtained from the department chair. The total sum of transfer credit is normally limited to 6 semester hours of credit and is not to be used in the computation of the GPA. Transfer credit will be allowed for an approved graduate course in which the grade was B or higher.

Application for Degree
Candidates for graduation are expected to file a degree application well in advance of Commencement and to notify the Graduate Records Office of their expected date of graduation (see deadline date in Academic Calendar).
