HOME INSPECTION

It’s anticipated that the home inspection industry will continue on this upward trend for the next several years. Are you ready?

Let us help you become a home inspector with our certificate program at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. This comprehensive program teaches the standards of practice of home inspection. It will provide you with a greater understanding and knowledge of the skills and practices necessary to own, manage and operate a successful and profitable home inspection business.

Note: This certificate attests to a student’s successful completion of a prescribed academic program. New York State does not certify building inspectors and certificate holders should not represent themselves as "certified" inspectors.

Faculty members are leading experts from the building industry. All courses are conducted in an informal workshop setting which encourages active discussion of work-related challenges.

Certificate in Home Inspection
To earn the Certificate in Home Inspection, each student is required to take six courses, two of which must be the core courses, "Residential Home Inspection" and "Report Writing, Contracts and Legal Issues." The core courses must be taken first. A waiver to take an elective course prior to the core course is possible based upon work experience or previous coursework. All requests for a waiver must be made in writing to the Program Director.

Course Descriptions

RESIDENTIAL HOME INSPECTION (Required)
An introductory overview of all the key areas of home inspection including grounds, drainage, foundation, structures, roofing, exteriors, plumbing and heating systems, electrical systems, and report methodology.

REPORT WRITING, CONTRACTS, AND LEGAL ISSUES (Required)
Prerequisite: Residential Home Inspection
This course will address all the basics, including detailed instructions in how to write both an inspection report and a building analysis report. It will also cover legal and liability issues and their implications for the residential inspector, as well as insurance coverage, contracts, disclaimers and exclusions

RESIDENTIAL ELECTRICAL INSPECTION (Elective)
This course covers residential electrical systems, principles of electricity, and the local, state, and National Electrical Code, with emphasis on inspection of the electrical panel, circuits and deficient areas typically found in residential wiring.

RESIDENTIAL HVAC INSPECTION (Elective)
This essential course covering the different types of heating and air conditioning systems, and will help you to identify, inspect, and perform an accurate assessment of the various systems inspectors encounter.

RESIDENTIAL PLUMBING INSPECTION (Elective)
This course will teach you how to conduct the inspection process in home plumbing systems, including waste systems, supply lines, hot water systems, vent systems, gas piping, plumbing codes, and public and private sewer systems.

RESIDENTIAL ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES & INSPECTION (Elective)
This course covers a wide range of issues including radon, lead, asbestos, oil, wood stoves, fireplaces, indoor air quality and other biological air pollutants.

BUILDING CODES (Elective)
An overview course covering the building and barrier-free codes that are essential for the design and development of residential and/or commercial spaces. Also discussed will be construction classification, fire protection, occupancy group classification, floor loads, means of egress, and barrier free-design.

RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION ESTIMATING (Elective)
You'll learn strategies for creating the accurate and competitive estimates that insure profitability and success as a remodeler. It will also enhance your ability to perform material take-offs from both blueprints and contracts.
