B.S. IN ADOLESCENCE EDUCATION
If you're interested in teaching at the middle school or high
school level (Grades 7 to 12), this 4-year initial certification
degree program gives you an in-depth look into the complex minds
of adolescents. You'll learn how to bring subjects alive for
them, and how to use classroom lessons to provide for their intellectual,
social and personal development. You'll study the dynamics
of group and individual motivations, and develop innovative instruction
plans. As an Adolescence Education major, you can choose to specialize
in one of the following subject areas: Biology, Chemistry, Earth
Science, English, French, Italian, Mathematics, Social Studies or
Spanish.
B.A. OR B.F.A. IN ART EDUCATION
If your talent is creating art and you wish to foster artistic
growth among young people, then a bachelor's degree in Art
Education can provide excellent training for a career teaching art
in day care centers, and nursery, elementary and secondary schools.
The B.F.A. has a strong focus on Studio Art while the B.A. program
includes broad-based liberal arts coursework. The B.F.A. program immerses you in the
theory and practice of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography,
printmaking and computer graphics as well as art history and art
education. This program also offers each student the unique opportunity
to display his or her own work to the public in an exclusive one-person
exhibition at C.W. Post's Student Art League Gallery. The B.A.
program has a strong liberal arts focus, requiring more core credits
in the liberal arts, and is well suited for the transfer student
who has already accumulated liberal arts credits. Both programs
- which provide thorough instruction in teaching practices
and opportunities for field-based experience - lead to initial
New York State certification (Birth to Grade 12).
B.S. or B.M. IN MUSIC EDUCATION
Want to share your passion for music by teaching? Our Music Education
programs - which focus on teaching children from Birth to Grade
12 - will give you a solid background in one of three concentrations:
Vocal/Choral, Instrumental or Piano/Theory. You will also explore
music theory, music history and literature, applied music, and music
education. The Bachelor of Music (B.M.) program offers a course
of study concentrating on musical performance and includes a senior
recital that is performed for the public. The Bachelor of Science
(B.S.) program combines a strong music program with a well-rounded
liberal arts background. All students in music education actively
perform at venues on campus, including the 2,200 seat Tilles
Center for the Performing Arts, and in concert halls both here
and abroad. Classes are led by an exceptional faculty of practicing
musicians and composers. Both programs include extensive student
teaching and lead to New York State initial certification.
B.S. IN HEALTH EDUCATION
Health teachers play an important role in our local school districts.
They are responsible for educating young children and adolescents
about healthy eating habits, stress management, exercise, sexually
transmitted diseases, family and relationship issues, and substance
abuse. Our bachelor's degree in Health Education provides a
broad-based curriculum, rooted in the liberal arts and sciences,
that prepares you to help different age groups (K-12) make informed
health-related choices. Our courses explore the latest trends in
health information and research and cover such topics as basic first
aid, human sexuality, marriage and parenting, physical fitness,
and handling emotions in everyday life. You will take classes in
biology, which will give you a solid base for understanding human
anatomy, evolution, reproduction, organ functions, and heredity
traits. Prior to graduation, you will have the opportunity to get
involved in clinical experiences at nearby schools.
B.S. IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Turn your passion for fitness and sports and your desire to teach
into a career in physical education. A crucial component of a child's
growth and development is participation in a well-designed physical
education program. Our Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education
will teach you how to develop and implement a developmentally appropriate
activity program that enhances motor skills, physical fitness and
the acquisition of movement-related knowledge. Learn techniques
to improve children's motor development and fitness, and help
them practice fundamental movement patterns, specialized skills,
and lifetime movement activities. Courses cover curriculum design,
skill development, student performance evaluations, human biology
and basic first aid. Students will have an opportunity to apply
what they learn in the classroom to field experience at local school
districts. This program offers an excellent foundation in the liberal
arts and sciences and prepares you for initial certification to
teach Kindergarten through Grade 12.
B.S. IN HEALTH EDUCATION AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Gain greater career flexibility while combining your interest in
health and physical education with our double major in Health Education
and Physical Education. Students in this program learn effective
techniques of classroom management, curriculum design and planning
for grades K through 12. Liberal arts courses in biology equip you
with knowledge in human anatomy and physiology. The Health Education
component examines nutrition, health care services, sexuality and
family planning, personal well-being, and drugs in contemporary
society. You will learn how to encourage children and teenagers,
in a non-judgmental approach, to discuss their experiences, attitudes
and values related to health issues. The Physical Education portion
shows you how to create a program that motivates students to stay
fit. Learn how to organize movement activities, impart rules and
regulations, conduct lessons that allow for maximum practice opportunity,
analyze student performance and identify sports-related injuries.
Gain field-based teaching experience through internships and student
teaching. Because the program offers the versatility to teach two
areas of study, additional coursework is required.
B.S. IN SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY AND AUDIOLOGY
Millions of Americans suffer from some form of speech, language
or hearing disorder and require specialized therapy or rehabilitation
services. This creates a high demand for trained professionals to
assist adults and children in overcoming their communication disorders
- ranging from stuttering to hearing loss. C.W. Post's
bachelor's degree offers a strong foundation in the diagnosis
and treatment of speech, language and hearing problems. The audiology
component of the degree covers normal hearing processes, hearing
loss, hearing aids, testing and evaluation. You will also learn
how to help people make the best use of their remaining hearing.
The speech-language pathology portion covers evaluation of speech,
language and cognitive-communication. Students can observe and participate
in actual clinical sessions at the Jerrold Mark Ladge Speech and
Hearing Center, located on campus. Because this is a pre-professional
program, you will have to continue your education on the master's
level if you want to work as a speech-language pathologist and audiologist.
Please see a description of our highly regarded master's degree
program in the next column.
