5-Year Bachelor's/Master's Degree Programs
B.S./M.A. IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION/CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
This 5-year dual certification program focuses on the development
of the whole child from birth through grade 6. The Early Childhood
undergraduate component concentrates on children from Birth to Grade
2, while the graduate Childhood Education portion focuses on Grades
1 to 6. Both sections offer student-teaching opportunities so you'll
spend valuable time in actual classrooms observing and working with
children. Your courses and field experience will help you understand
the complexities and principles of child growth and development,
plan instruction that meets the child's needs and curriculum
goals, and employ various methods of assessment. Courses cover important
issues such as teaching in a multi-cultural environment and the
importance of playtime in early childhood development.
B.S./M.A. IN CHILDHOOD EDUCATION/EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
This 5-year dual certification program is similar to the B.S./M.A.
in Early Childhood Education/Childhood Education, except that
the bachelor's degree emphasizes the learning and development
processes of the child in Grades 1 to 6 while the master's
degree concentrates on Birth to Grade 2.
B.S./M.S. IN CHILDHOOD EDUCATION/ADOLESCENCE EDUCATION
This 5-year dual certification program offers excellent versatile
teaching opportunities. Not only will you be trained to teach grades
1 to 6 but you will also become certified in one specialized subject
area for grades 7 to 12. The Childhood Education undergraduate degree
(Grades 1 to 6) focuses on the needs of younger children such as
reading, writing and computer literacy as well as social and study
skills. In the Adolescence Education program, you'll concentrate
on Grades 7 to 12 and become qualified to teach one academic subject
area**. You'll master a variety of teaching strategies designed
to encourage creative expression, critical thinking, problem-solving
and classroom performance.
**Adolescence Education Degrees/Graduate:
C.W. Post offers six Master's Degree programs in Adolescence
Education (grades 7-12): Biology, Earth Science, English, Mathematics,

bachelor's degree focuses on Grades 7 to 12 while the master's
degree concentrates on Grades 1 to 6. In addition, you can choose
to specialize in one academic subject area*. You'll master
teaching techniques, create instruction plans, recognize learning
problems, and create classroom settings that promote positive educational
experiences.

nine Bachelor's Degree programs in Adolescence Education (grades

B.S./M.S.ED. IN CHILDHOOD EDUCATION/SPECIAL EDUCATION
Special children need special teachers. Our new 5-year dual certification
degree program will prepare you to be such a teacher. The program
starts with a solid foundation in general childhood education (Grades
1 to 6) and then branches out into teaching elementary school children
with special needs such as mental handicaps, learning disabilities
and behavioral problems. You will explore the historical, social
and legal foundations of special education and receive extensive
clinical experience. Children from local public and private schools
come to the campus for clinics during which you will assess their
abilities, prescribe a plan of action and begin to teach. Not only
will you become familiar with the characteristics of children with
varying levels of learning difficulties but you will also learn
to adapt instructional strategies and materials to fit their needs.
Extend your certification to cover Bilingual Education.
B.S./M.S.ED. IN ADOLESCENCE EDUCATION/SPECIAL EDUCATION
This new 5-year dual certification degree prepares you to teach
one subject area (such as English, Social Studies or Mathematics)
to Grades 7 to 12, and then offers professional training in special
education for this age group. You will begin the program by gaining
a thorough command of one subject area of your choice. Then you
focus on the Special Education component of the program where you
study the evaluation, diagnosis and education of children with problems
ranging from mild learning disabilities and emotional disturbances
to severe and multiple handicaps. Courses cover curriculum development
and classroom management as you explore the use of technology in
optimizing the educational experience for these youngsters.
B.S./M.S. IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION/LITERACY
There's more to literacy than reading. There's intellectual,
physical, social, emotional, motivational and moral growth. This
comprehensive approach is what makes this new 5-year dual degree
program distinctive. In the undergraduate portion, you'll explore
the principles of child growth and development for Birth to Grade
2 and you will gain an understanding of instructional strategies
and assessment methods. You'll learn about the role of play
in early childhood creativity, critical thinking, problem solving
and performance. The M.S. in Literacy portion of the program focuses
on Birth to Grade 6, and prepares two types of literacy providers:
classroom teachers and literacy professionals. Coursework covers
reading comprehension, selecting appropriate literature for classroom
learning, remedial instruction, and current trends in testing and
reading techniques. This dual degree program prepares you to sit
for the New York State teacher certification exam. You will have
the opportunity to work with individual children as part of your
clinical training.
B.S./M.S. IN CHILDHOOD EDUCATION/LITERACY
The B.S./M.S. in Childhood Education/ Literacy a new 5-year
dual certification program is similar in structure to the
B.S./M.S. in Early Childhood Education/ Literacy. However, the undergraduate
portion of this degree offers training for a broader age group (Birth
to Grade 6) and also places an emphasis on elementary education
curricula such as social studies, mathematics and science. The graduate
portion in Literacy (Birth to Grade 6) is identical to the M.S.
in Literacy. Extend your certification to cover Bilingual
Education.
B.A./M.S. IN ADOLESCENCE EDUCATION/LITERACY
This dual degree program is a unique opportunity to be trained
in two distinct areas of study. On the undergraduate level, you
choose to major in one of nine subject areas: Biology, Chemistry,
Earth Science, English, French, Italian, Mathematics, Social Studies
or Spanish. This degree qualifies you to teach that subject to Grades
7 to 12. The M.S. in Literacy focuses on Grades 5 to 12 and prepares
you to teach reading skills, literacy and literature to the adolescent
and young adult populations. Both components of this 5-year degree
program give you in-depth instruction in the use of verbal, nonverbal
and media communications in the classroom and also show you how
to develop instruction plans based on subject matter, student interest,
community and curriculum goals. This program leads to dual New York
State teaching certification.
BILINGUAL EDUCATION EXTENSION PROGRAMS
Certified teachers may broaden their certification to cover additional
subject areas, grades or populations by enrolling in an extension
