Dean's Welcome
The C.W. Post School of Education is most interested in working
with students who come into the field of education with a sense
of personal mission. We are committed to working with students who
care deeply about children and who feel that intellectual vigor
is critically important but not the exclusive goal of education.
Our broader focus is on healthy and whole human development
which we believe is the foundation for educational achievement.
In this context, the School of Education at the C.W. Post Campus
of Long Island University commits itself to being responsive to
the social and cultural issues that play out in the daily lives
of children, our schools and our local communities. It is our task,
and the task of every educational leader, to focus first and foremost
on what children need to grow and learn; to grapple with complex
realities of individual development, family and social life; and
to assume personal responsibility for the creation of educational
environments worthy of growing human beings.
CHILD-CENTERED EMPOWERMENT
These ideals, undergirding our undergraduate and graduate programs,
are clearly evident in projects we have undertaken with local schools,
most notably a collaborative effort with the School Development
Program of Yale University and the Westbury School District. This
project is actively developing a child-centered model of educational
renewal in what we have come to recognize as one of a growing number
of urbanized suburbs. Funded in part by the Rockefeller Foundation
and other philanthropic organizations, this initiative is the first
of its kind in the nation. Our collaboration creates unprecedented
opportunities for students of education and practicing educators.
This program and others involving internships and professional development
provides students with meaningful practical experience to compliment
the theoretical aspect of our curricula.
ELECTRONIC LEARNING COMMUNITIES
We also recognize the vast opportunities to enhance the educational
experience by integrating advances in technology. Information and
communication technologies are continuously transforming not only
our abilities to communicate but to form learning communities. The
School of Education integrates state-of-the-art technology into
nearly all of its courses and programs. Of particular note is the
Electronic Educational
Village (EEV), a creation of the Department of Educational Technology
and local museums, schools and businesses. The EEV was recently
honored as a Smithsonian Laureate and one of the nation's most innovative
applications of educational technology. We are working on a wide
range of technology-based possibilities to enhance our preparation
of educators and increase the professional knowledge of our graduates.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE
If you share our commitment and if you wish to explore innovative
possibilities for the future, there is no better place than the
C.W. Post School of Education to prepare for a profession in education,
counseling or speech pathology.
"We commit ourselves to preparing educational leaders who
will focus on what children need to grow and learn. We are dedicated
to leading the way in the development of wholesome learning environments
in our schools."
- Robert Manheimer, Ed.D., Dean, School of Education
