LONG ISLAND UNIVERSITY/C.W. POST CAMPUS
MEMORANDUM
To: C.W. Post Campus Community
From: Joseph Shenker, Provost
Date: October 15, 2001
In light of the current world situation and incidents
occurring at other universities around the country, I feel that this is an
appropriate time to remind ourselves of one of Long Island University’s
founding principles: our mission of inclusiveness and mutual respect.
The C.W. Post community is a diverse population that crosses
all socio-economic backgrounds, nationalities, ethnicities and religions. This
atmosphere of multiculturalism has enriched the educational experience of our
students and campus life in general for all of us who are fortunate to be a
part of this special campus community.
In the wake of the terrorist attacks, some individuals may be feeling a variety
of emotions, ranging from grief and helplessness to anger. Sadly, there have
been recent reports of misplaced anger and animosity nationwide. I would like
to remind everyone that we have a variety of resources available for any member
of our campus community in need of counseling to deal constructively with
emotions that may arise during this difficult time. Our Student Health &
Counseling Center and Psychological Services Center offer free, confidential
support services. In addition, our chaplains in the Interfaith Center are
readily available for support and guidance.
I would ask everyone at C.W. Post to remember our history
and to hold dear our mission of tolerance, civility and respect for people from
all walks of life.
A MESSAGE FROM THE PROVOST:
To: C.W. Post Campus Community
From: Joseph
Shenker, Provost, C.W. Post Campus
Date: September 20, 2001
Time: 12 p.m.
This is a time of great
sorrow and I would like to express my deepest sympathy to all who have been
affected by the devastating tragedy.
Please be aware that some of our students, staff or faculty
may need to take leave from the University due to involvements with a National
Guard or Military Reserve unit. The President has already made a call to
activate members of these units.
We do not wish to place any additional burden on our
students relative to their enrollment, university records and billing.
Moreover, we wish to be supportive of faculty and staff who may have been
called to active duty. Therefore, should you be aware of any students, faculty
or staff in this situation, please contact the C.W. Post Provost's Office at
ext. 2701 or email bridget.Szerszynski@liu.edu.
Our thoughts are with them as they serve our country.
We know that several members of the C.W. Post Campus
community have family and friends who have been injured or killed in this
terrible attack. If you know of any student, faculty or staff member who has
suffered a loss, please contact the C.W. Post Provost's Office at ext. 2701 or
email bridget.Szerszynski@liu.edu.
I would like to thank our faculty who are helping the campus
community begin to come to some understanding of last week’s tragic events by
discussing what has happened in their classrooms and by staying in touch with
their students via email and phone, even in the midst of the Rosh Hashanah
holiday.
The C.W. Post Campus community continues its tradition of
respect for different cultures and religious beliefs by demonstrating
inclusiveness, compassion and understanding. Our commitment to mutual respect
and caring is being shown daily by the campus groups who are gathering for
quiet reflection, prayer and candlelight vigils. In the days to come, as we work toward coping with what has
happened and restoring a sense of normalcy to the campus, we must remember to
remain united during this difficult time.
