M.S. Degree Program in
Clinical Laboratory Management

The Clinical Laboratory Management (CLM) Master of Science (M.S.) degree program at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University is offered through the Department of Health Sciences and prepares clinical laboratory personnel for leadership positions in management.

The CLM program provides its students with those skills that can be applied to managing health care problems. Students are prepared to comprehend issues in finance, operations, personnel and marketing. In addition to preparing its graduates in four management areas, the CLM program requires its graduates to apply their learning through completion of a clinical management project under the direction of a mentor.

Graduates of this M.S. degree program have been challenged to making management decisions throughout their coursework that can be directly applied to their management role in the clinical laboratory. This degree is intended to impact on their decision-making ability and its use within health care facilities.

In the area of financial management, students are exposed to topics that address budgets, cost analysis, purchasing, accounting, reimbursements, inventory control, capital equipment acquisitions, billing and collection, cash flow analysis and/or contract negotiation.

Operations management addresses topics such as quality assurance, licensure, accreditation, medico-legal issues, intra- and inter-departmental relations, data processing, safety, flow charting and management of the operating facility.

In all clinical laboratories personnel management is the key to a successful laboratory. This area of study addresses issues such as: motivation, staffing/scheduling, performance standards and evaluations, counseling or disciplinary action, education, training/continuing education, the job description, wage and salary administration and negotiation.

If the laboratory hopes to perform a significant service for the community at-large, it must also explain its productivity, capacity, turn-around-time and its relationship with other local laboratories. These issues are addressed in market management

The CLM graduate is a person who has both the scientific and technical knowledge combined with administrative capability which is necessary for a successful management role within the laboratory setting.
