Government Information Department
Government information is a tremendous resource for research on a broad
range of topics including business and economics, criminal justice,
education, environment, geology, health and nutrition, and population to
name just a few. Much of this information is available from the Internet.
A larger amount is available in more traditional formats through the Federal
Depository Library program, whereby certain libraries are designated to
automatically receive government materials as they are published.
The B. Davis Schwartz Memorial Library of C.W. Post became a federal depository
in 1964, and the Government Information Department selects about 75% of
the thousands of documents made available each year through the depository
system. The Department also has a significant number of documents
published prior to 1964, some dating from the very beginnings of the nation.
Since 1989 the library has also been a research depository for New York
State. The Government Information Department has access to thousands
of government related websites. Major ones include:
No matter what the format, government information, although plentiful,
can be complicated to find and use, but there are always
Librarians
in the Department to assist you.
Depository materials are available to everybody. Outside users
must make an appointment (516-299-2142) if they want to use computerized
resources. Electronic information may be downloaded, printed out,
or, in some cases, e-mailed. All users must bring in a diskette or
writable CD if they want to download. Printing is 10 cents a page.
Government Information Department materials do not circulate out of
the building. No identification is needed to use them within the
department. A valid Long Island University ID or driver's license
must be presented in order to use them in another department or to take
them for photocopying. Photocopying is 10 cents a page.
Hours vary during holidays, finals,
and summers. Call 516-299-2142 for exact hours.
