What's New?
Newsletter of the Reference Department - November 2000
Our database subscriptions are always changing, as
are their search methods. Here are some new titles
and a few helpful search tips. Also highlighted are
some websites of interest.
Library Information for Faculty,
the Library's
revised Faculty Handbook is available in Reference.
Library Liaisons should pick enough
copies up for
their designated departments.
Databases
Use Dialog@CARL for not only newspapers, but
databases, such as:
- AIDSLINE: which covers research, clinical
aspects and health policy issues on Aids from
1980 to the present
- Drug Information Fulltext, EMBASE Alert:
which is the most recent 8 weeks of
pharmacological/biomedical literature
- Foundation Grants Index:
A nice feature is that you can search 6 of these
sources simulataneously by depressing Control key.
Our subscription to OCLC's New
FirstSearch
now includes
Internet
& Personal Computing
Abstracts, formerly Microcomputer Abstracts,
which is useful for technological topics.
Don't forget
World
Book Encyclopedia, also
available online through this service, even though we
have Encyclopedia Britannica linked from the
Reference or Library homepage.
Two new
databases are available from
ABC/CLIO:
Health
Reference Center-Academic (formerly
available through OCLC's FirstSearch and through
Gale Group's Infotrac) is now only available from
Infotrac.
A trial period of
PsycINFO Plus Text is a
Pro-Quest Product (now
owned by Bell and Howell) and is found under
ProQuest Psychology Journals - covering 300
academic journals in psychology and related
subjects.
WebSPIRS
has a few new additions:
- Library Lit and Information Science FTX
12/84-8/00. To search for full-text items, type in "txi=y" (Full-Text Indicator) and then
use those results with your search
terms.
- POLTOX I 1996-present for articles on pollution
and toxicology issues.
Trial Databases
Check the Trial Databases
listing on the Reference Homepage for a list (with
dates) of current trials available, explore these
databases, and give us your feedback. Some include
several full-text databases available from
Pro-Quest through WALDO:
- BasicBIOSIS PlusText
- CINAHL PlusText
- PsycINFO PlusText
Other trials are listed below:
Microsoft Word Tip
To delete files easily, go to
File OPEN menu and choose file. Right click on mouse and
choose Delete from the pull-down menu. Voila!
Meetings/Training/Conferences
After our annual LIU Librarians Conference which
was held at Brooklyn Campus this year we shared
ideas with our 718 and 631 colleagues and talked of
holding a more intense winter retreat.
Dona
McDermott and
Laura Manzari
shared their
research on Information Literacy at our first Fall
Teatime (11/14/00). Our sessions are similar in
framework to Teaching Circles. If you have any
suggestions for future topics, contact us at 2305.
