Under the direction of Alex Stewart, the Jazz Ensemble has played local jazz clubs and high schools and performed with guest artists such as Billy Taylor, Eddie Palmieri, Paquito D'Rivera, Maynard Ferguson, Phil Woods and Clark Terry. A strong emphasis is placed on performance of classic repertory of jazz composers like Duke Ellington, Neal Hefti and Thad Jones. A past concert entitled "Swingin' the Blues: Music from Kansas City" featured 1930's swing and early be-loop arrangements acquired from the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Other concerts have featured the music of Maria Schnieder, Bob Brookmeyer and other contemporary arrangers. In 1994 the Jazz Ensemble was selected to perform at the NYSSMA Convention. On Thursday, December 10, 1998, tenor saxophonist Bob Mintzer will be appearing at Tilles Center with the jazz band. |
